Mary Andrews

Mary’s English degree included Phonetics and Linguistics, so her career developed teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, both in colleges in England and less formal situations abroad, and then English to all age ranges in secondary schools in London. For 20 years she was the British Inter-Cultural Advisor at an American school. She now works on a voluntary basis under the auspices of the English Speaking Union, helping primary school children whose first language is not English.

Hilary Chamberlain

Hilary Chamberlain had a career as a textile designer before retraining as a teacher. After several years teaching in London comprehensive schools, she took a career break to look after her children. Since then Hilary has been a governor at four schools and works part-time as a governor trainer and family literacy consultant. She became a trustee of RISE in 1998 and is currently studying for a PhD investigating home school communication in London primary schools. Hilary’s four daughters all attend their local comprehensive school.

John Coe

John Coe is an experienced primary education specialist. After working as a teacher and headteacher in both rural and urban schools he joined the former West Riding Authority as an inspector of schools. Later he moved to Oxfordshire where for 16 years he lead the primary advisory team. In 1985 John moved into higher education and for four years he directed postgraduate primary training at the London Institute of Education. His work then took him to Oxford Brookes University and currently as a Fellow he is engaged in writing and research.

Ada Fordham

Ada Fordham taught in state primary and secondary schools for 30 years. She was active in encouraging parental involvement in education as a parent member of the Campaign for State Education, as a teacher working with immigrant parents and as a researcher at the University of Southampton. She was involved with developing the role of governors with several local authorities and universities. Ada helped to set up Action for Governor Information and Training which led to working with governors and governor trainers in many local authorities. Ada has been a governor at schools covering the 3-19 age range and has served as Chair of CASE and Chair of AGIT.

Ron Glatter

Ron Glatter was Professor and Director of the Centre for Education Policy and Management at the Open University for many years. He is currently a visiting Professor at the Open University and the University of Warwick, and a member of the council of the Institute of Education, University of London and also of the Advisory Centre for Education (ACE). He chaired a secondary school governing body for six years and has been a governor of a primary school and a college of further education. Both of his daughters attended a comprehensive school.

Libby Goldby

Libby Goldby joined RISE as correspondent in 2003 when she moved back to London after retirement. She had been principal of a Leicestershire community college and before that headteacher of a girls’ comprehensive in Barnet. Her earlier teaching career (she was originally a classicist) included posts in grammar, secondary modern and comprehensive schools and four years at an independent school in New York. She is now a governor of a Haringey community school and represents governors on several committees in the borough.

David Gordon

David Gordon has designed and edited the RISE web site since it was first set up and carried out the latest redesign. A former Chair of the Campaign for State Education, he is a journalist, author and qualified further education lecturer and his been the editor of School Governor Update since its launch in 2000.

Nadine Lemond

Nadine studied Sociology at university, which led to an interest in both education and research. After graduating with a BSc in Sociology with Business in 2006, she became a data researcher for the RISE website in 2007.

Melian Mansfield

Melian Mansfield has experience in all sectors of education, including early years, primary and secondary. She works with schools and local authorities across London training headteachers, teachers, governors and parents. Her areas of expertise include working with parents, children’s rights, roles and responsibilities of governors and school development planning. Formerly a teacher, she is the parent of five children and governor of two primary schools. Currently, Melian has written two books on home-school links and is the Chair of the Campaign for State Education, Chair of London Play and Vice Chair of the Early Childhood Forum at the National Children’s Bureau.

Maurice Plaskow

After teaching for several years Maurice Plaskow joined the BBC to work in educational broadcasting. He moved to the Schools Council as a Curriculum Officer, involved with curriculum development projects in the arts and humanities. When the Council was closed by Margaret Thatcher and Keith Joseph he became an independent consultant. Since retirement he has chaired the UK Education Forum, set up by the National Consumer Council, and has been a judge for the teaching awards since its inception. He has been a RISE trustee for several years.

Joan Sallis

Joan Sallis is a miner’s daughter who won a scholarship to university and gained a first class honours degree. After working at the then Department of Education and the Board of Trade, Joan resigned to raise her family who all attended state schools. As a parent she campaigned for parental involvement, comprehensive education and democratic governing bodies. Joan was one of the first parent governors and served on the Taylor Committee, which reviewed school governance. Joan is still an active governor, a writer on governance issues and national President of the Campaign for State Education.

Margaret Tulloch

Margaret Tulloch worked on the taxonomy of microscopic fungi before having a family. Campaigning about school meals and the need for a local comprehensive in the early '80s started her interest in education campaigning. She was on the national executive of the Campaign for State Education for 16 years, much of it as a spokesperson. She is a school governor and secretary of Comprehensive Future, a group campaigning for fair admissions.
